Your first point, screen by screen.

This guide is for a player who has not started a run yet. It explains what each screen means, what to press, and one safe practice goal without assuming you already understand the physics.

1. OPEN THE GAME MENU

Choose Play WebTug. The menu shows the best score saved in this browser, a Play button, sound and fullscreen controls, and an invitation button after you have a score worth sharing. Press Play once to enter the ready screen; this does not move the spider yet.

2. START FROM THE READY SCREEN

The ready screen repeats the complete rule: hold to web upward; release and gravity pulls down. Press and hold inside the canvas to start. On a keyboard, hold Spacebar or Arrow Up. A mouse or trackpad button works inside the canvas as well.

3. AIM FOR THE MIDDLE OF THE FIRST OPENING

Do not chase the web’s contact point. The strand aims visually into the forest; your real choice is how long upward acceleration continues. For the first practice run, hold until the spider’s downward curve begins to flatten, then release before it rises near the top trunk.

Aim for comfortable clearance, not the cap. Passing the complete trunk earns one point only after its right edge moves behind the spider.

4. READ THE RESULT SCREEN

A collision starts a short fall, then the result card shows this run, the saved best, and the highest medal threshold reached. Retry resets the spider and forest for another run. Main Menu returns without deleting the best. Challenge a Friend creates a link containing the score to beat.

THREE BEGINNER MISTAKES TO NOTICE

  • Holding until the spider is level with the gap. Upward momentum continues after release, so let go earlier.
  • Using frantic micro-taps during a fast fall. A 0.07-second tap creates only about six pixels of total lift from level and less obvious rescue against developed momentum.
  • Watching the spider instead of the opening. Keep the spider in peripheral vision and shift attention to the nearest trunk edge.

YOUR FIRST PRACTICE TARGET

Try three runs with one goal: clear the first opening through its middle. Ignore medals and best score. On the fourth run, glance at the second opening while crossing the first. That one change begins the transition from reacting to planning.

WORKED EXAMPLE: RELEASE WHILE STILL RISING

Suppose the spider is moving upward at 200 pixels per second when you release. Release changes acceleration immediately, but it does not erase velocity. With the published downward acceleration of 920 px/s², it takes about 0.22 seconds for that upward velocity to reach zero. During that interval it rises roughly 22 more pixels before turning downward.

This is a continuous-time estimate from the game’s constants, away from collisions and speed caps; the frame-by-frame path differs slightly. Its practical lesson is to leave headroom when you release. If you wait until the spider is already against the top of a gap, a change of input may come too late.

FIRST-RUN QUESTIONS

Do I have to wait for the strand to reach a tree?

No. Upward acceleration starts with the hold. The strand takes about 0.12 seconds to finish its visible extension, so a shorter press can still change the path. The animation is a timing cue, not a delay before lift.

Does a different spider make the first opening easier?

No. Every profile uses the same movement, hitbox, and scoring. Choose the appearance you enjoy and use the real species photographs and films to learn what inspired its silk animation.

What should I change after a failed run?

Pick one correction. If you hit the top, release earlier on the next attempt. If you hit the bottom while already falling quickly, begin the recovery sooner. Keeping one practice goal makes the result easier to interpret than changing the skin, screen orientation, and rhythm at once.
