WebTug Classic guide. The controls, scores, and shared character rules on this page describe Classic. The six science arcade games have their own controls and simplified physics.
WHEN A POINT COUNTS
A tree scores after its right edge has moved behind the spider and the spider has not collided with either trunk. Each obstacle carries its own “passed” state, so it can award exactly one point. Passing close to the cap, using a long hold, or crossing the center does not change the value.
12→CLEAR THE FULL TRUNK
12→RIGHT EDGE PASSES
13
A bright three-note sound and particle burst confirm a point when sound and motion are available. The number itself remains the authoritative result.
MEDALS ARE MILESTONES, NOT SCORE BONUSES
The result card shows the highest threshold reached in that run. A score of 39 shows Gold; 40 shows Platinum. The medal does not alter speed, gap generation, later scoring, or future runs. There is no maximum score imposed by the medal system.
BEST SCORE LIVES IN THIS BROWSER
At game over, WebTug compares the run with the stored best and keeps the larger value in browser local storage. That makes quick replay possible without an account or server profile. Private browsing, clearing site data, or moving to another device can reset the visible best. Reinstalling or updating the page normally does not.
Older internal WebTug storage names are checked during migration, and the highest valid value is kept. The game ignores negative, missing, or nonnumeric stored values.
A CHALLENGE TARGET MUST BE BEATEN
After a run, “Challenge a friend” creates a link with the score in a beat parameter. The recipient sees both the friend score and the score needed to win. A target of 20 is tied at 20 and beaten at 21. The link does not carry a player identity, account, email address, input history, or leaderboard position.
Targets are limited to whole numbers from 0 through 999,999. Invalid values are removed rather than treated as a score. A shared score is a friendly target, not independently verified tournament evidence.
WORKED EXAMPLE: TWO RUNS AGAINST A FRIEND
You open a challenge with a target of 20. Your browser already has a best of 22. The first run ends at 19: the result is Bronze, the challenge remains unbeaten, and the saved best stays 22. These three numbers describe different things.
On the second run you reach 23. That run earns Silver, beats the target by three points, and raises the local best to 23. The medal itself contributes no points. Had you stopped at 20, you would have earned Silver but only tied the challenge; reaching 21 would have beaten it without exceeding the stored best of 22.
SCORING QUESTIONS
Why did entering the gap not award a point?
The spider must clear the full trunk. Being centered between the upper and lower trunks is not the same as the obstacle’s trailing edge passing behind the spider. This also explains why a collision near the far edge can end a run before the expected point appears.
Can the lab improve my score or unlock medals?
No. The Spider Physics Lab is a separate educational activity. Its energy, stiffness, and damping controls do not feed into the game or saved best.
Why is my best different on another browser?
Each browser has its own local site storage, even on the same phone. A challenge link carries a target to beat; it does not transfer the sender’s saved best into the recipient’s browser. Check the original browser before clearing any site data.
